ITS & CCTV Design
AMD Engineering prepares stand-alone ITS plans for VDOT and local agencies, including closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, dynamic message signs (DMS) and vehicle detection, along with the power and communications needed to bring each device online. Plans are prepared to agency standards and coordinated with operations staff so new devices integrate with existing traffic management systems.
On large-scale express lanes projects, AMD Engineering provides high-level owner’s review and advisory services and conceptual design of the full ITS and tolling network, including cameras, vehicle detection, gates, lane use management signals (LUMS), DMS, fiber communications and duct banks. Our principals have supported express lanes programs from the owner’s side on the Virginia MegaProjects GEC and VDOT’s NOVA MegaProjects Office, so we understand how field devices, communications and tolling systems must come together for successful integration.
Under a multi-year traffic engineering and ITS on-call with VDOT’s Richmond District, AMD Engineering was part of the design team for a turn-key CCTV program of 13 camera sites, about $3 million in construction, with independent third-party plan review. AMD’s role was the design of two camera sites in Dinwiddie County, which were placed from aerial imagery instead of survey to reduce cost on sites with minimal disturbance. Aerial flights at each site captured line-of-sight photos to set tree clearing limits and keep camera views clear, and the design covered power and communications integration.
Our principals bring ITS experience from Virginia's express lanes and megaprojects. Mr. Newberger was traffic engineering and ITS design lead for VDOT on the $1.4 billion I-495 Express Lanes and the I-95/I-395 Express Lanes, and served as electrical engineer of record for the I-64 Express Lanes toll system, including all wiring and conduit diagrams to supply power to and communication between the tolling equipment. He also assessed gates, cameras, detectors, signage, power, communications and all other ITS infrastructure for the redevelopment of the northern end of the I-395 HOV corridor. Today he reviews ITS and communications designs for compliance, constructability and safety as traffic engineering subject matter expert for VDOT's NOVA MegaProjects Office.
AMD Engineering prepares complete ITS and CCTV plan sets. A typical plan set includes:
- Device layout plans: the location, station and offset of cameras, poles, cabinets, detection and signs, drawn over the existing conditions base
- Camera site details: pole height and mounting, field of view, and line-of-sight documentation including tree clearing limits
- Power design: service points and coordination with electrical service providers, conduit and wiring, and voltage drop calculations
- Communications design: fiber and conduit routing, splice and connection details, and integration with the agency network
- Poles, foundations and cabinets: support types, foundation details and equipment cabinet layouts
- Maintenance of traffic: work zone traffic control for device installation
- Quantities, specifications and estimates: bid item quantities, special provisions where needed, and an engineer's estimate of construction cost
